A few words from our vicar
Dearly beloved in Christ,
“A wandering Aramean was my father----------”so begins the affi rmation of the Israelite as he brings the off ering of the fi rst fruits. Deut. 26:5-11. This portion reminds us that one of the primary ways in which a people are held together is by collective memory and the regular periodic affi rmation of these memories as a community. This is the role played by religious festivals. The word that runs through this portion and most of the admonitions given by God throughout history to His people is “Remember “ As a mnemonic aid, I want to use three words and three phrases.
Remember your roots.
Remember the Route.
Remember your Redeemer.
The day we forget or do not want to remember, we begin our descent to sin and depravity. If we feel ashamed of recounting the way God led us,we play into the hands of the adversary. The next inevitable step is to forget our Redeemer and sink into ingratitude .May we enter a New Year, aware of the subtle ways in which we fall away from God.
It is on a note of sorrow that we bid farewell to the year 2015. Our beloved Suff ragon Metropolitan, The Rt.Rev.Dr.Zacharias Mar Theophilus was promoted to the presence of the Lord whom he loved and served all his life. Having been acquainted with a brother and Thirumeni’s father in Ernakulam, many years ago, one can understand the early infl uences that shaped this godly life. The Mar Thoma Church is poorer because of Thirumeni‘s sudden and unexpected demise. But let us thank God for giving us a godly leader for almost fi ve decades. Let us us uphold Thirumeni’s siblings and their families in prayer.
The year 2015 saw the rise and consolidation of the ISIS and the consequent displacement of hundreds of thousands who had to leave hearth and home and live as unwelcome refugees in sub-human conditions. Many innocents have been beheaded and tortured. Even in Europe and America, the tentacles of terrorism has fostered unnatural responses to the refugee crisis. There is a palpable atmosphere of fear. It is in this context that our faith in the Lord becomes all the more relevant. As we have ushered in the new year, there is the ever present hope that this year would be better. The realization of the threat posed by ISIS has united nations to work together on an unprecedented scale.
As a parish, let us thank God for His goodness and blessings. This year should be the year of family prayer when we make a special effort to ensure that every family in our parish is faithful in family prayer. Children and youth with whom our parish is specially blessed should make it their mission to ensure regular family prayer in their homes.
